Apropos of nothing……

I filled my ipod with random stuff today cos we were going out for a drive. At some point in the journey, “Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush came on. It’s a song I like, but haven’t heard for years. It always just sounded like a cheery jingly pop song with a particularly nice vocal. Today, though, for some reason I paid a bit more attention to it than usual and, instead of listening to it as a pop song, listened to it with the novel (which I’d re-read for the first time in ages a few months ago) squarely in my head.

It’s still a nice song – but that one refrain (the chorus):

“Heathcliffe! It’s me – your Kathy – I’ve come home! I’m so cold, let me in at your window.”

when listened to in the context of the book, it’s absolutely blood-curdling horrific. I don’t think I’ll ever hear the song in the same way again.
