So much for Mahler week.
As tends to happen with art, one thing led to another and Mahler took my hand and went skipping merrily down a rabbit hole of Bruckner (who I’d had no exposure to previously). As someone whose symphonic experience really stopped with Beethoven, the advances in the form made by these two TITANS can’t be understated. If you want to see what I mean, start with Mahler’s 6th and Bruckner’s 7th or 4th. Take your time – the beauty of a symphony is that you don’t have to understand its structure, its technical musical details, or what the composer is trying to convey – you just need to listen to it.
